Adults: when practical, cleanse the affected area by patting or blotting with an appropriate cleansing wipe. Gently dry by patting or blotting with a tissue or a soft cloth before applying this cream. Apply externally to the affected area up to 6 times daily, especially at night, in the morning or after each bowel movement.

For Internal Use:

  1. Wash your hands prior to applying. Try to use the bathroom before using to empty your bowels and bladder and ensure the affected area you plan to apply the cream to is clean.
  2. Remove the cover from the applicator and attach it to the tube.
  3. Squeeze ointment into the applicator to fill it and ensure the applicator is lubricated.
  4. Gently insert the applicator about an inch into your rectum and squeeze the tube to apply the ointment.
  5. Clean the applicator thoroughly between uses and avoid having any bowel movements (if possible) for up to three hours after applying the cream.
  6. Wash your hands after.

Preparation H Rapid Relief with Lidocaine contains the following ingredients:

  • Glycerin (14.4%) – temporarily protects the affected area to make bowel movements less painful
  • Lidocaine (5%) – a local anesthetic that helps relieve pain associated with hemorrhoids
  • Phenylephrine HCl (0.25%) -- a vasoconstrictor that temporarily shrinks hemorrhoidal tissue
  • White petrolatum (15%) – protectant to lubricate the affected area to make bowel movements more comfortable
